Summer league teams bowled over
by K.D. Mahnal
The North Coast Bowling Association is midway through its summer "no tap" league. The league bowls at Westgate Lanes at 7 p.m. on Thursdays.
Sanctioned by the International Gay Bowling Organization, the "no tap" league counts the first ball rolled that knocks down nine pins as a standard 10-pin strike. If less than nine pins are knocked down, a second ball is rolled to pick up the spare. This allows bowlers with lower averages to compete on a more even basis with bowlers with higher averages.
League response has been "greater than expected," said league secretary Bill Harrison. The league has ten teams, each with four bowlers, and the season is 12 weeks long.
Why join a summer bowling league? Kegler Bev Kerr of Friends of Toto said she joined "because I enjoy bowling and it's a lot of fun."
In games bowled June 22: Love Me Dad, Make Me Squirt beat Summer Four-Play 2,370 total pins (three games)
to 2,166 pins; Just Us defeated Old Goose and Ganders, 2,437 pins to 2,319 pins; Slush Sisters beat Friends of Toto, 1,783 pins to 1,563 pins; Friends of Dorothy squeaked by Big Boys by 28 pins, 2,019-1991.
The top three league leaders in High Handicap Single Game are: Slush Sisters, 971; Cleavers, 965; and Big Boys, 940. Leaders in High Handicap Series (three-game pin total) are: Slush Sisters, 2,671; Just Us, 2,558; and Big Boys, 2,557. Handicap statistics are determined on a weekly basis, depending upon which two teams bowl against one another. After the difference between the total averages of the two teams is determined, the lower average team gets 100 percent of the pin difference added to its score, before games are bowled.
High Scratch Single Game leaders are: Paul Y., 300 (perfect game); Bill G., 280; and Brian Widmer, 278. High Scratch Series (three-game total) leaders are: Bob L., 752; Paul Y., 738; and Ed P., 723. Scratch series and game figures are actual pin totals, without a handicap score added.
Keglers strike it rich

Cleveland held its fourth annual Gay Invitational Fellowship Tournament (GIFT) June 15-17 at Buckeye Lanes in North Olmsted. The tournament drew 160 bowlers from across the United States and Canada.
GIFT, a tournament sanctioned by the International Gay Bowling Organization, is one of many held annually in Canada and the United States. The purpose of IGBO is "to promote fellowship, unity and competition," said GIFT Director Bob L.
The tournament featured three-game competition in singles, doubles, teams and an all-event category, which was a total of nine games bowled in the other categories. A high and low scratch (actual score-no handicap) division received special awards for high game and three-game series.
The attendance at Cleveland's tournament has grown from its first year, but "has been pretty stable at 160 [bowlers]," said Bob L. This year's tournament drew keglers from Chicago, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Canton, Houston, Detroit, Ft. Lauderdale and Toronto.

The GIFT tournament is an annual reunion of friends for many of the keglers.
It was the first out-of-town tournament for John Coholan of Toronto. "My roommates came, so I came ... I think it's a great tournament, well-organized."
A group from Pittsburgh echoed those sentiments. "It's a blast. We look forward to coming to GIFT every year," said Willie Shannon.
Bowlers from Milwaukee also had praise. "The tournament is very well organized. Everyone makes us feel so welcome...I really couldn't afford to come, but I came anyway.”
GIFT arranged private housing at the bowlers' request when possible. It also had discounted lodging available at the Airport Marriott. This is standard for most IGBO tournaments.
Of the $67 entry fee, $25 went to the prize fund, totalling $4,000. The balance covered banquet costs, bowling fees and administrative expenses. In an effort to give prizes or money to as many participants as possible, a raffle of prizes donated by sponsors was drawn.

Sweet and Sour Melon
With this being the season for fresh fruit, this is my second favorite way to eat it. The editor wouldn't let me tell you the first.
4 cups of melon (honeydew or cantaloupe)
1/2 cup of sugar
11⁄2 cup of vinegar nutmeg
Cut the melon into cubes. Heat the sugar and vinegar together till the sugar dissolves. Mix with the melon, and let sit for two or more hours in a refrigerator. To serve, arrange on serving plate and top with nutmeg.

Poached Chicken
S
I for one am tired of having cold fried chicken. One more piece of parts in a brown hard shell and I'm going to get ugly. So I found a new way to make cold chicken for picnic and light summer din-
ners.
4 chicken breasts 3 cups of milk
ginger ground cloves allspice
Rinse the chicken with cold water. Rub the tops of the chicken with the spices, place in a covered dish and chill at least one hour or as long as overnight. Pour the milk in a large pan and place the chicken in so that it isn't touching. Over a low heat simmer the chicken 15 to 20 minutes or until the centers are no longer pink. Remove the chicken and reduce the liquid till it thickens. Spoon the sauce over the breast and chill overnight.
